Glasgow Evening Photoshoot Part 2

A rainy night in Glasgow Town (again)

As tradition dictates, our second Glasgow Evening Photoshoot was met with the expected cool and rainy weather, confirming that some things in photography are as constant as the pursuit of light. Several of the same members who attended Part 1 joined us for this outing.

This time, we met at the vibrant Christmas market at St. Enoch Square. We gathered under the shelter of the Bank of Scotland awning, bundled up—as the song goes—"like Eskimos," ready to brave the elements for the sake of the shot.

We split into smaller groups to investigate different parts of the market. Most attractions were open, but given the weather, there were few punters—in fact, there seemed to be more photographers than revellers. This naturally made the expected street photography challenging, as there isn't much interest in photos of static Christmas stalls, no matter how nicely decked out they might be.

Despite the low-key crowd, the dedicated photographers of the Hamilton Camera Club turned the challenging conditions into creative opportunities, with the wet conditions becoming a friend of we enrthusiasts. We made imaginative use of the elements including

  • Reflections in puddles, transforming the ground into a mirror for the market lights.

  • The shiny livery of a food truck, providing a clean surface for abstract reflections.

  • Drips on the glass of the subway entrance, used as a subtle foreground filter.

  • Juxtapositions of objects at different distances, employing depth to create compelling compositions.

This session proved yet again that great photographs are less about the perfect conditions and more about the photographer's ability to "see" and adapt to the environment. The focus will shift to reviewing the captured images in a future club meeting.
