Glasgow Evening Photoshoot

The Hamilton Camera Club organized an evening photoshoot on Thursday with two potential locations: Glasgow Central Station and the Exhibition Centre precinct. I chose the station venue and was pleasantly surprised to see eight other club members had joined despite the cool and rainy evening.

We split into smaller groups, and I partnered with experienced club stalwart Barry. It was already dark, but the streets were still bustling with workers, students, and revellers. It took us a short while to find our rhythm, but we soon settled into a comfortable pace. We then ventured into the lanes around Hope Street and Renfield Street, capturing some grungy photographs of bins and beer barrels.

One challenge I encountered was the high contrast between brightly lit windows and deep shadows. To counter this, I set my camera to Auto ISO and opted for 1/500th second exposures to prevent motion blur. As a result, the ISO increased significantly, and the aperture on my 23mm lens was as wide as it could go. I ended up taking more photos than anticipated, with the more successful ones featuring strong foreground elements, interesting reflections, and clear depictions of the rain. I also experimented with pointing the camera into shop and bar windows, though with mixed results.

It was a highly enjoyable experience to get out and practice photography, especially with Barry's valuable input and suggestions. We both agreed that active photography is a crucial aspect of our club's activities.
